How much has sports coverage evolved in your career? How much more do you expect it to evolve in the next 5 and 10 years?
Sports coverage is evolving all the time, and seems to move at a faster rate every year that goes by. Smart phone ownership and usage, plus the popularity of social platforms has created a huge new playing field and anyone can have a voice. The challenge is always to evolve your strategy and go where the fans go.
The technology and morphing of media has changed so much, but so has the money in sports. There is a lot more at stake for everyone now. I don't see either slowing down.
I could write a book on how much sports coverage has evolved during my career (which reminds me: I really should have bought stock in Google). It's going to evolve rapidly in the next five to 10 years, especially on mobile. But great content is still important and people will pay (I believe) for quality in the space.
@Duncan hits on a big danger in sports journalism.
Finally, how much of a role will fan participation play in sports coverage as we go forward?
We select content based on a set of criteria that tries to marry trusted, objective sources and rich content that centres and drives engagement. Relying purely on fan generated content is not ideal either because the story gets lost or the chatter is hard to catch up with. Which takes us back to the importance of a good mix of solid, professional journalism seasoned with fan opinions that encourage and reward audience participation.
User-generated content will only grow. We've seen this again during this year's World Cup.
People like to know what other people think, so user generated content is a big potential growth area. It just requires a lot of time and has some potential risks.
I hope it plays a huge role in sports coverage -- without fans there would be far less sport. Sport is inherently social, and it's much more valuable to have true conversations about what's going on than printing something in a newspaper and someone shouting at it over breakfast. Fans can't make the ball cross the goal line, but they do let us know what's most exciting to them.
Thanks all, enjoyed it! Byeeee
